Superorganism
By Kevin Webb
Why we supported it
Superorganism imagines a world where humans and nature thrive together, where bold entrepreneurs are empowered to reverse biodiversity loss and create an abundant future for all life on Earth. In this world, the industries driving extinction are transformed by innovative startups that prove we can do more than just co-exist with nature.
Superorganism is bringing that vision to life. As the first venture firm dedicated to biodiversity, it is building a model for how capital, expertise, and networks can be deployed to solve the planet's most urgent environmental challenges. Its goal is to find and supercharge founders tackling extinction drivers, and to inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs who see nature as central to innovation and economic transformation.
Problem:
We are living through the sixth mass extinction, with biodiversity loss accelerating at an unprecedented rate. Despite growing awareness of the climate crisis, the interconnected biodiversity crisis receives far less attention and investment. The industries most responsible for species loss—agriculture, infrastructure, resource extraction—continue largely unchanged, while nature-based solutions and conservation efforts face massive funding gaps.
Root Cause:
Our economy treats nature as separate from business, rather than recognizing that nature runs through every industry. Traditional venture capital overlooks biodiversity-focused startups, while the industries driving extinction lack disruptive innovation. Superorganism seeks to change that. It invests in pre-seed and seed startups across three key areas: slowing and reversing extinction drivers, creating climate and biodiversity win-wins, and developing enabling technologies like remote sensing and genomics. By combining over two decades of experience in conservation, venture capital, and startups with a powerful mentors network, Superorganism is rebuilding the economic system to work with nature, not against it.
