Why we supported it

Camp Flo is building a future where young men, especially young men of color, grow up connected, confident, and emotionally strong. It’s creating a pathway for them to understand themselves, build meaningful relationships, and develop the social and emotional skills they need to lead lives of purpose and peace.

At Camp Flo, boys learn that strength is not about dominance, but about awareness.  They learn to listen, to express emotion, to build trust — and to find belonging in community rather than in conflict. Through mentorship, nature, and shared experience, Camp Flo gives young men the tools to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and integrity.

By helping boys build these foundations early, Camp Flo is breaking cycles of violence and isolation, creating a generation of young men who can lead with empathy, courage, and connection.

Problem:

Violence among youth, especially among boys of color, continues to limit futures, fracture families, and weaken communities. Too many young men are growing up without safe spaces to express emotion or find support, and without positive role models who understand their experiences. The result is a tragic pattern: boys who could be leaders, creators, and healers are instead pushed toward anger, disconnection, and survival at any cost.

Root Cause:

Young men of color often lack access to environments where emotional intelligence, reflection, and vulnerability are nurtured.  Many grow up in systems that punish rather than guide, schools that don’t teach emotional awareness, communities strained by inequity, and cultures that tell boys to suppress their pain.

Camp Flo changes that story. It provides a strong community of mentors, peers, and experiences that help young men build emotional literacy, self-worth, and belonging. By cultivating these foundations early, Camp Flo helps boys choose connection over conflict and chart a new path.
